Application
Designed to seamlessly match fully austenitic high-alloy heat-resisting steels, commonly referred to as 17/38 or 38/17, this electrode caters to their specific characteristics. These alloys are typically found as castings with an approximate carbon content of 0.4% or in wrought form with around 0.08% carbon. While the electrode composition closely mirrors that of castings, practical experience has shown its compatibility with wrought alloys as well, although opting for a nickel base type would enhance weld metal ductility. With an elevated nickel content and low thermal expansion, the alloy exhibits remarkable resistance to thermal shock. Furthermore, it demonstrates high resistance to carburization and oxidation, with the caveat that it is not suitable for use in environments with high sulfur levels. Retaining robust mechanical strength up to 1050-1100°C, this alloy finds diverse applications in heat treatment trays and containers, retorts, furnace rollers, molds, hearth plates, radiant tubes, and furnace fittings and headers within the heat treatment and high-temperature process industries. Preheat is generally not required.

Microstructure
AW microstructure consists of austenite with eutectic and secondary carbides. Fully austenitic but with an apparent ferrite of up to 5FN.
